Daybreak: Clinton to Stand Up for Syria Action

• Secretary of State Clinton heads to the U.N. Security Council today to lobby for passage of an Arab-European resolution that, among other things, would call for President Assad’s ouster. Russia is the main opponent. [FP The Cable]

• Diplomats gathered at the U.N. Security Council were treated to reports of renewed fighting, verging on outright civil war. [NYT]

• The leader of Jorg Haider’s old far-right party in Austria called his compatriots “the new Jews” because they, too, are persecuted. Some did not take kindly to the comparison. [DPA/Haaretz]

• Roger Cohen has an excellent report from Lithuania on “Holocaust obfuscation” and “the suffering Olympics” between the Jews (under the Nazis) and the Lithuanians (under the Russians) [NYT]

• Likud elections are today. Prime Minister Netanyahu will win re-election as leader handily, but the religious right portion of the party is nonetheless increasing ominously. [Haaretz]

• The late music mogul Alan Meltzer left substantial sums to his chaffeur and doorman. But you really just have to read the article. [NY Post]
