Jacob who? Jacob Lew!

President Obama announced today that Jacob Lew, an Orthodox Jew who is currently director of the Office of Management and Budget, will succeed former Chicago mayor William Daley as White House chief of staff.

Lew, who is 56, is widely known as a straight-shooter and, during his time in the Clinton White House, has earned a reputation as an able go-between for the White House on Capitol Hill. Last summer, he played a key role in the fraught debt-ceiling negotiations—a critical point in his favor when it came time to selecting Daley’s replacement, administration officials told Politico. Obama, speaking from the Dining Room of the White House, said he expects Lew to continue working on economic issues: “I have every confidence that Jack will make sure we don’t miss a beat and continue to do everything he can to secure our economy and help the middle class and keep America safe.”

A Queens native, Lew got his start in Washington working for Bella Abzug. He will be the first Orthodox Jew to hold such a senior West Wing position, according to Nathan Diament, the director of the Orthodox Union’s Washington operation. “That is a wonderful testament to Jewish life in America, as well as to his record and his experience,” Diament said.

We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Julia says:

He didn’t replace Richard Daley, but Bill Daley. Who is also from Chicago, but was not the city’s mayor.

Allison Hoffman says:

Julia, thanks for the catch – I’ve been reading Chicago history lately and clearly my brain is stuck in another era!

JamesPhiladelphia says:

Aren’t brothers Richard and Bill Daley? Bill Daley was a successful business investor. And had worked also for Clinton. But is supposed to be difficult to get along.

Bill Daley is the son of one former Chicago mayor (Richard J. Daley), and the brother of a second (Richard M. Daley). But he was never mayor himself.

Chicagoans do like to keep it in the family, but let’s get our Daleys straight.

I wonder how Orthodox he could be while meeting the demands of his job. The White House is a seven day a week operation.

Hershl says:

He must be willing to work seven days a week.

If not, toss him.

Religion is no excuse for dereliction of duty.

BTW, the Chabad bozos are an insult to all Jews with their cult of dead rebbe messiah and a religion that only bares a passing relationship to Judaism. They do not represent American Jewry which is mainly Reform and Conservative in makeup.

When will the people in Washington realize that by picking these idiots they are insulting the Jewish community?

Mildred Bilt says:

So maybe the various denominations of Conservative, Reform and Orthodox Rabbinic Jewry don’t quite resemble the disparities of practice and belief in the American Jewish communities either. Also the Chabads have more than 60 disparate dynasties whose beliefs and practices would really send you screaming to the nearest health clinic. Then there are the wicky wacky “Jewish” cults in Israel itself. Relax Hershl. It could have been a Pentacostal who talks in tongues or a born again Christian whose goal is to ensure Armageddon becomes a reality. You seem unaware this country is a nation of nutties of all stripes. Meanwhie Lew doesn’t have a 3 foot beard and a great big black hat. So far, so good.

Norman Grossman says:

He should not take the job. Especially since it has to do with working for Obama. Jews should stay away from Government. He might become another Dov Hikind. We do not need a Jew for a patsy for the low life Democrats. Worse yet he might become another Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and that would be a disaster for Jews
