The Harlem Shake Invades the Upper West Side

Who does it better: Columbia or Yeshiva University?

Indiana University Lacrosse Team's 'Harlem Shake'(LacrossePlayground)

I’m being ambushed on Twitter by fans of a new-ish internet meme called the “Harlem Shake.”

I can’t explain it, I can’t really describe it, it involves some dancing, and lasts for approximately 30 seconds. Presumably it’s filling a Gangnam-sized hole in peoples’ lives all across the world.

The two videos I’ve been asked to pit against each other are versions of the meme presented by students at Columbia University and Yeshiva University respectively.

Here’s Columbia University’s attempt:

And here is the Yeshiva University edition:

I’m too befuddled to pick a winner, each is ground-breaking in its own way: one for the use of cold weather, the other for the smashing of religious conventions, so I’m leaving it for the readers to pick the winner.

Daily rate: $2
Monthly rate: $18
Yearly rate: $180

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at letters@tabletmag.com. Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

Afrayedknot says:

I give props to Columbia for doing it out in the snow, but YU wins on numbers, enthusiasm and creativity.

    Abletoable says:

Eh there was nothing that really sets the YU one apart from the other Harlem Shake videos. Whereas that guy falling in the Columbia video is pretty damn funny.

      Afrayedknot says:

I haven’t seen any others besides these two for comparison. But while the guy falling in the Columbia video was funny, it didn’t seemed plan. I appreciate the skill and strength of the guy dancing on his hands in the YU video more.
