The International Center for Photography is hosting an event featuring two of our favorite people: Alana Newhouse and Maya Benton. The topic is the photographer Roman Vishniac, whose archives the ICP acquired just a few years ago.

Join ICP Adjunct Curator Maya Benton for a lecture on Roman Vishniac and a Q&A with Tablet Magazine Editor in Chief Alana Newhouse. Maya Benton is an art historian who focuses on documentary photographs of Jewish life in central and eastern Europe in the interwar period.

If you’re familiar with Vishniac, you’ll be happy. If you’re not familiar, read up on Vishniac from Alana Newhouse’s excellent piece in the New York Times Magazine, which also features Maya Benton, who worked with the Vishniac family.

herbcaen says:

I think I will skip this nonevent. Alana Neuhaus is trying to make a career on pulling down Roman Vishniac. What has Frau Neuhaus accomplished on her own? Perhaps they should invite Holocaust denier David Irving for more spice

    PabloJudah says:

Um, not sure what you’ve been reading herbcaen. It is quite obvious that Ms. Newhouse and Ms. Benton have both done more than any two people on the planet to revive Vishniac for a new generation, and to firmly establish his place in the canon of great photographers. And in terms of what Newhouse has accomplished, you’re reading Tablet. Your actions answer your own question. There shall be plenty of spice at this event with these two amazing individuals. There is no need to add to the mix holocaust deniers, i.e. Irving, or people who lack basic reading comprehension skils, i.e. herbcaen.

I have read the article by Alana Neuhaus. I also have the beautiful photographs by Vishniac in the book “A Vanishing World. With reference to di caputa when he said to Benton” It could be true, but who the hell knows?” My reply is: “Who the hell cares! The dialogue is unimportant, the photographs are the real issue and they are magnificent. Vishniak was a true artist and without his photographic abilities and desire to travel and catch the images, none would exist. There will always someone whop will try to invent the wheel.
