Why UN Schools in Jordan Won’t Teach the Holocaust

Teachers say it ‘harms the Palestinian cause’

A UNRWA School in 2012(UNRWA)

There’s a troubling (perhaps unsurprising) story today about the United Nations Relief and Works Agency schools in Jordan, which refuse to include the Holocaust in their curricula. Word–not even decree, but word–that studying the Holocaust might be introduced into UNRWA schools as part of a conflict resolution course prompted this statement from the teachers in Jordan.

“We condemn this decision, which equates the butcher and the victim,” read the teachers’ statement, demanding instead to introduce classes on the Palestinian right of return and the history of the 1948 war with Israel.

This isn’t the first time the issue has come up at UN schools. In 2009, Hamas responded to a similar rumor about plans to introduce the subject of the Holocaust at UNRWA schools in Gaza by denouncing the idea, but adding for effect that “the Holocaust is a lie invented by the Zionists.”

In both instances, the United Nations denied that a change in the curriculum was coming and explained that it defers to the host country on these matters. This is why everyone listens when the United Nations speaks.

What happened to you Jordan? You used to be cool.

Do Israeli schools teach Nakba studies. Let us continue with the circular discourse of whose suffering is more sainted extreme by any and all means.

You mean the memorial day to the Arabs not being able to kill the Jews?

    Lynne T says:

Do Arab schools teach that: 1) 88% of Mandatory Palestine was left to create an “Arab homeland”? Do Arab schools teach that, 2) since the 1948 partioning, most of Mandatory Palestine came to be called Transjordan or Jordan, 3) that the majority of Jordan’s citizens are Palestinians and that the Jordanian treasury receives a great deal of money for keeping some Palestinians in refugee camps 60+ years later 4) in the meantime Israel resettled many more Jews from the MENA who, like most of the world’s refugees, cease to be considered refugees once resettled? The situation of the Palestinians is an “own goal” with strong assists from some of the world’s most repressive and corrupt regimes.

From the Reuters article: “In an open letter to local UNRWA chief John Ging,
the movement’s Popular Committees for Refugees said: “We refuse to let
our children study a lie invented by the Zionists.””

The irony about Hamas’ Holocaust denial is that they accept Zionist logic: The creation of a Jewish state in their country was justified by the Holocaust. They do not care enough to form a rational argument against this point, so they take the racist and stupid path of denying concrete history. The teachers’ statement is similarly wrong-headed. Teaching the Holocaust does not equate Israelis and Palestinians; to acknowledge that Jews were systematically persecuted in Europe does not negate the fact that non-Jews are persecuted by the Zionist state.

The intellectually demanding task is to seriously research both the Holocaust and the Zionist project, and all you really have to do is read primary research, such as Raul Hillberg and Christopher Browning (for the Holocaust), Gershon Shafir and Etan Bloom (for early Zionist settlement). You can still come away realizing Zionist settlement in Palestine was not a campaign to rescue European Jews and did not have that aim in mind.

Of course, there’s no problem with Hamas’ ban on Holocaust education that doesn’t exist in the enlightened USA with other historical atrocities, but they can still be condemned on this point by thoughtful anti-Zionists.

lets get one thing clear here , the things Israel did and still does to Palestinians doesnt
much differ in uglyness what has been done to the jews in till 1945 in germany .
I find it sad and vile that the Israeli state shamelessly abuse their tragedy from the past to justify killing of children and Innocents. And blaming Islam??? ok theres much to blame but your fucking religion is about being a Jew and being Goi….Goi means the non Jews are lesser human beings designed to serve you . Get a grip shovel the shit outta your own religion.

Go ahaead bomb Iran , while doing that wipe out all palestinians …i heard a couple of
you guys saying that openly,Go fuck the world over because you fucks think that youre the superiour race . you didnt learn from the holocaust …youre practising it in slow motion right now.

Ihr seit eine schande
