• Over American objection, the U.N. Human Rights Council is sending a fact-finding mission to probe the effects of Israeli settlements on the Palestinians (including in East Jerusalem). Some right-wing outlets are already calling it “Goldstone 2.” [Haaretz]

• U.S. and European intelligence agree: Iran has not decided to build a bomb and are years away from truly having one if they make that decision. In the words of a senior U.S. official, “They’re keeping the soup warm but they are not cooking it.” [Reuters]

• The administration plans to allow $1.5 billion in Egyptian aid to be transferred despite Congressional restrictions in the wake of the military government’s crackdown on NGOs. [FP The Cable]

• The mother and husband of three of those murdered in Toulouse, France, called on Jews to do good deeds and observe Shabbat in memory of her family. []

• Hundreds of fans of Beitar Jerusalem assaulted Arab cleaning personnel at a mall (Beitar is that club), and it’s been captured on video, yet so far no arrests have been made. [Haaretz]

• Drake’s new video, to feature Lil’ Wayne, is being filmed at a Miami synagogue. Can’t wait. [Faith Goes Pop]

Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.
