Daniel Halper lays out the countours of the Zivotofsky case, which the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments in this morning, today in Tablet Magazine: how some whose children were born in Jerusaelm want their childrens’ U.S. passports to identify their country of birth as Israel; how two successive administrations have resisted this; and why the Supreme Court is likely to maintain the status quo without affirming it.

The plaintiffs in the case, suing the government for the right to have their son’s passport declare that he was born in Israel, are represented by Nathan Lewin, who, as senior writer Allison Hoffman reports also today in Tablet Magazine, has made a living and a legacy defending Jewish causes, including some that many (even his friend Alan Dershowitz) find indefensible.
