Today in Tablet Magazine, Richard Landes explains how Hamas, Hezbollah, and al-Qaida are using mass media to wage “cognitive warfare,” the frighteningly effective tactic of choice for apocalyptic movements that remains, more frighteningly, largely unacknowledged by the West. Landes cites two recent trends that have contributed to the success of these movements:

“On the one hand the adoption of some of the most vicious jihadi discourse—in particular the new anti-Semitism in the guise of anti-Zionism—and on the other, the equally strident attacks, often by non-Muslims, on those who try to identify the Islamic sources of the problem as hate-mongering Islamophobes.”
