The surname Bachmann, the Ultimate Authority informs us, derives from Switzerland and Germany and refers to those who lived near a brook (Bach). Does that sound particularly Jewish to you? How many Jews do you know who live near brooks?

Yet the New York Post reports that Mitt Romney is losing Jewish donor money to Rep. Michelle Bachmann, his fellow Republican presidential candidate, due to the perception that her name indicates Semitic heritage.

They need to re-examine her Yiddish.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at letters@tabletmag.com. Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

My father, grandfather, g-grandfather, gg-grandfather and ggg-grandfather all lived near a brook near Marburg Germany. I live near one too in NC.

Apparently it’s a Jewy-enough last name for Allan Sherman: From “My Son the Folksinger”

Sarah Jackman, Sarah Jackman,
How’s by you? How’s by you?
How’s by you the family? How’s your sister Emily?
She’s nice too. She’s nice too.

(Jerry Bachman, Jerry Bachman,
So what’s new? So what’s new?)
Whatcha doing Sarah?
(Reading John O’Hara.)
He’s nice too.

FreeMind says:

Not surprising, Bachman is a German surname and many Ashkenazim have German surnames

Marsha Roseman says:

You don’t get it do you? Jews are giving Michelle Bachmann money because, unlike President Obama, she actually SUPPORTS ISRAEL.
Yes, many Jews are waking up to the fact that Obama hates Israel. In fact , that is the opinion of the majority of Israelis. wake up, Jewish America!
