That Tiresome Jewish Thing

Comment of the Week

(Ravi Joshi/Tablet Magazine)

Winner gets a free Nextbook Press book appropriate to his or her comment (provided he or she emails me at with his or her mailing address).

This week’s winner is “David Sucher,” who complained, apropos Bethlehem Shoals’s column on the (non-)Jewishness of Jeff Van Gundy, “I love Tablet but the Jewish thing gets a little tiresome. No?”

Well, yes, but it’s what we do, and maybe it’s not so bad. You get Ruth Wisse’s Jews and Power, because maybe there should be even more of “the Jewish thing,” if you can imagine that.

Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

I love Tablet’s Jewish thing.

Not all columns can be awe inspiring. Van Gundy has to carry his burden of “looking like a Jew” and we Jews can revel in his possible discomfort. Or, maybe his pride. Or maybe his utter disregard of what people think he looks like. This is Tablet’s idea of a comic section. Hurray for them!

Thanks so much and just to put things in perspective, I already have an _inscribed_ copy of “Jews and Power” by Professor Wisse. Already.

I used to be suggested this blog by my cousin. I am no longer sure whether or not this put up is written by way of him as nobody else understand such designated about my trouble. You are incredible! Thank you!
