ChaeRan Freeze highlights the life and work of Soviet Jewish painter Felix Lembersky today in Tablet Magazine on the occasion of a show at Brandeis of two paintings (one never before exhibited) from the artist’s landmark series that depicted the 1941 Nazi massacres of Jews at Babi Yar. Keep in mind that to create art, under Stalin, that showed specific Nazi animus against the Jews was a risky venture.
