Anna Phillips, an education reporter at GothamSchools, interviews Aaron Listhaus today in Tablet Magazine. Listhaus is the executive director of the Hebrew Charter School Center, a non-profit that is looking to replicate Brooklyn’s Hebrew Language Academy, a dual English-Hebrew charter school, in other parts of the city (Washington Heights and Harlem for now) and, eventually, nationwide. The current school is not sectarian, and nor is its student body. But nor is it like every other school. “At the Hebrew Language Academy,” Listhaus notes, “the phys-ed teacher, when he counts off, counts off in Hebrew.”
