Foxman on Beck: ‘Bigoted Ignorance’

Demands apology for Fox News host’s comments

Last time Glenn Beck said objectionable things about Jews, Abraham Foxman, the head of the Anti-Defamation League, for the most part defended him. “People involved in global finance have been called all kinds of things,” he told me of Beck’s argument that Soros was seeking to control the world financial system. More broadly, Foxman more or less dismissed Beck’s “insensitive remarks” on the grounds that he is “a friend of the Jewish people, and a friend of Israel.” Which is why, earlier today, I concluded my post on Beck’s latest outburst—in which he compared Reform Judaism to “radicalized Islam,” saying both are primarily about politics, not faith—with the sarcastic quip, “I’m sure Abe Foxman won’t be on the case in no time.”

Well, credit where it’s due, I stand corrected, etc. In a statement today, Foxman accused Beck of “bigoted ignorance” and said he should apologize to the Reform movement:

Glenn Beck’s comparison of Reform Judaism to radical Islam demonstrates his bigoted ignorance. Despite his feeble attempt to suggest that he was not equating Reform Judaism with Islamic extremist terrorism, the simple fact that he would mention them in the same breath is highly offensive and outrageous.

The truth is that every religious body has political points of view, whether one agrees with them or not. To compare Reform Judaism, which supports democratic institutions, to Islamic extremism, which supports anti-democratic movements and the repression of basic rights—including, for example, the denial of women’s rights—is beyond the pale.

Glenn Beck has no business discounting the faith of any people, and he should think twice before commenting on something he doesn’t know much about. He owes the Reform movement an apology.

Don’t think I can’t still quibble—Foxman appears, to me, to be more offended by the comparison to Islamism (which Beck himself limited in the course of his making it) than anything else. Still, the concise term “bigoted ignorance” actually manages to capture the quote nicely—the willed know-nothingness tinged with fear of Jews. All in all, a good day’s work for Foxman.

Old Rockin' Dave says:

Glenn Beck seems to me to be practicing a form of brinksmanship. I don’t know what came before this, but not too long ago he started promoting the writings of John Bircher types who also were known anti-Semites. He got away with it. Next came the attacks on George Soros using anti-Semitic imagery. He drew only limited fire for that. Now he has demonized the plurality of North American Jewry. The ADL has belatedly gotten onto him for that, but still there are few calls for him to be yanked off the air. I am sure that when the fuss dies down, he will push it a little farther. At some point he will probably cross over into overt Jew-baiting. By then public discourse will have been irrevocably poisoned.
I recommend doing as I have done and sending letters or emails of protest to Fox News indicating that you intend to boycott Beck’s corporate sponsors, and if that doesn’t work, then all Fox sponsors and then all Fox media or products.

I think we’re seeing the biggest crack yet in the OLD Jewish guard (ADL_AIPAC axis, and their septuagenarian-octogenarian support base). Foxman is detached from the reality of young Jews so much, he apparently doesn’t recognize classical antisemitism when Soros is the target, since Soros is on the other end of Jewish politics than Foxman. Is this the ADL or the ADRWJL (anti-defamation of right wing Jews league)?

It is pretty easy without wasting time writing to the Aussie Empire – in the UK dont ever select a channel with SKY in the title and in the USA dont ever select a channel with FOX in the title – your cable or FIOS box will send a very quick message to the advertisers – and this subtle electronic approach will get a lot more attention than emails.

If you really wanted to have fun – then simply re start the discourse on FOREIGN ownership of the media… Imagine if a foreigner had recently bought NBC/MSNBC instead of a domestic corporation… The chalk board would have been pretty busy on Fixed News…

Ed Lobel says:

Perhaps it is now time to boycott everything Fox, from the N.Y. Post to every single company that sponsers a Fox T.V. show. Perhaps hitting Murdock in his pocketbook will get him to realize that beck is a serious liability and his extremely hurtful bigotry must go!

As an american who happens to be jewish, and a jew who happens to attend a reform synagogue..

1)Beck has a factual argument to make about Soros based on his currency manipulations in the 90’s in Asia which has NOTHING to do with religion, just as Soros’ self confessed lack of conscience over his actions in WW2 mark him personally as reprehensible and beyond salvation, and color his every motive in the eyes of those with objective judgment, with maximum cynicism. It is a PERSONAL observation about the man, and not about jews.

2)Beck HURTS HIS CASE (AND HIMSELF) IN THE EXTREME with the truly ignorant remark about reformed jews since I know for a fact there are WAY MORE centrist > conservative people in the movement than ‘common thought’ would admit. Shockingly so. Being, for instance, anti dogmatic cannot be equated with thinking the constitution does not mean what it says (Cass Sunnstein), or thinking that certain political leaders have much negative to say about allies, and nothing about those inimical to our way of life, and the security of our people in those lives, when protesters show up in each nation

But you have to ask yourself… what other judgments has Beck made which are equally as IGNORANT? YOU HAVE TO.

I am always amazed to see the truly ignorant ‘boycott Fox and Murdock’ words from those who see ‘liberal’ in the mirror, but act in ways truly anti-liberal just because they IMAGINE their heart is in the right place.

Marty Janner says:

Glen Beck, who has the following of millions, speaks of what he knows not! His latest oration, relative to the 400 Rabbi’s is totally without merit! Inferring that these spiritual leaders can be equated with Fundumental Islamists is ridiculous! However his listenership is one that treats his verbeage as Gospel.

Can we ever hope to change thinking among these people, I would say not. However when a gentleman like Foxman, wakes up to the poison he is guilty of, after the fact, this is the issue. Perhaps it’s time this guy to retire!

It is true that Beck has always supported Israel, however what he is guilty of is the most reactionary diatribe imaginable. The values he holds are contrary to our democratic principles, we as Jews must see both sides of the coin! As citizens of this great country we hold dear, we are in the throes of a war for the values we earned previously by the heart wrenching efforts of those that preceded us!

Mr. Murdoch has a money making cow in the guise of Mr. Beck! What we must do, is hit him in the pocketbook, use every tool possible to achieve this. Only then, may we rid the airwaves of this poison!!!

Yes, boycott everything Fox, including Foxman. I’m so disappointed in the should get out of the anti-discrimination business (as AF picks and chooses who’s deserving) and focus entirely on anti-Semitism. His lame parsing of language around Turkey and the Armenians caused huge suffering for Jews in New England. His avowed “sneaking in” to a showing of the “Passion of the Christ”, was reprehensible. I agree with Ehud above, the older folks (that would include me) need to step aside and let the next generation take the lead.

King of Cufflinks says:

I have a great reform idea, MAKE THE MUSLIM FAITH ILLEGAL !!!!!! It’s predicated with hate and the morons who try to distinguish “Good Muslims” & “Bad Muslims” are wasting my (all sane individuals) time. I really could care less to spend one second trying to figure out which towl head is good or bad. ILLIMINATE THE INSANITY !

L.W.Lucas says:

Yeah, yeah, yeah if it wasn’t for Beck you’d still have your head so buried so far of where you know where that you would deserve what you could get. Be grateful all you Soros lovers and those like him with their buried agendas feeding off of your mother’s dried pablum and the fumes from your dirty diapers and stop being led by idiots who only from time you check their e-mails when you are bored and jump to give voice to a faceless entity. I really pity you!!

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

Abe foxman is a democrat and only will ask for apologies from republicans.

Ever hear him ask for an apology from Farrakhan or from Al Sharpton.

Well, is he asking for an apology from Ron Shiller from NPR?

Of course not..they are democrats. Foxman is worthless for discrimination against Jews. It occupys a small bit of his business and he uses money donated by old ladies who think it is for the defense of Jews to create programs for minoritys or defend Palestinians.

Old Rockin' Dave says:

George Soros may not be the best-loved Jew in the world, but he is still a Jew and has been demonized on that ground alone around the world (see the words of Mahathir Mohammed). We should not pick and choose which Jews to defend and which ones to throw out of the sleigh when anti-Semites come after one of us.

Fantastic post with new thoughts, I love it.

Please tell me that youre going to maintain this up! Its so very good and so essential. I cant wait to read more from you. I just feel like you know so much and know the way to make men and women listen to what you’ve to say. This blog is just too cool to be missed. Excellent stuff, truly. Please, PLEASE keep it up!
