• Dan Shapiro, a top administration national security aide, will be nominated to be the United States’s next ambassador to Israel. [Laura Rozen]

• Gaddafi is unwilling to go. Time to recall that one of his sons is actually all Western-y. [WP]

• Oh, and Gaddafi is technically Jewish. Wait, what? [Israel Today]

• French-Israeli law professor sues for criminal libel for a slightly negative book review. One defendant, NYU Professor Joseph Weiler, is a pretty fascinating guy. [NYT]

• The two main bodies governing Reconstructionist Judaism in America will merge. Sell-outs. [JTA]

• This piece goes on and on about how unutterably different Reps. Anthony Weiner and Jason Chaffetz are from each other, without mentioning a certain crucial similarity! [NYT]

Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

Jason Chaffetz converted to Mormonism, apparently, so they no longer have that “crucial similarity.”

Let’s please not credit claims of Jewish origin for every misbegotten sleazeball presidente, in the Middle East or elsewhere. It’s just birtherism, antisemite style.

Weiler is even more interesting than you know – among other things, he’s a Modern Orthodox Jewish defender of Christianity in the public square (based on his view of religious freedom) and an advocate for Jewish-Christian rapprochement. Check out this bio and interview in the National Catholic Reporter:
