• Former Secretary of State George Shultz asked President Obama to release Jonathan Pollard. [Ynet]

• Prime Minister Netanyahu insists sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program have so far been insufficient, and that more are required. [WSJ]

Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

Like her or hate her, Sarah Palin’s opinion is correct. Andrew Sullivan took off like a sprinter trying to arraign her for the crime. And she’s not the only one to toss around the phrase ‘blood libel’ and neither is Glenn Reynolds.

The Tablet magazine is so off the charts. Palin is pro jews and pro israel while obama has done more to help israel’s enemies and hurt israel than any president ever.

Obama sat and listened to rev wright’s hatred for a decade against jews.

Pro israelis use the term blood libel with the same lies from the press against israel that palin is getting.

Palin’s map was a map of targeting swing districts which the democrats have used.

The left hates jews and blames them for what happened in south africa. While the left supports hamas, syria who are friends with the butchers in sudan doing the killing.

If you go to a liberal site like dailykos or democraticunderground or obama’s 2008 election site the comments against israel and jews are off the charts.

Did you see the left’s campaign against joe lieberman. They call him holy joe on liberal sites like dailykos which obama goes on and keith olberman posts on. They cheered when hezbollah rockets hit israelis. The left took away lieberman’s enviornmental committee seat because of their obsession with him.

Obama arms syria and lebanon and is the most pro radical islamist president ever.

As a jew I am sickened that they don’t get it. The far left are your enemies not sarah palin.

Obama is systematically destroying israel. Israel is on trial at the UN for preventing weapons coming in because obama insisted on the UN trying isreal in the flotilla case to win support among arabs.

I saw on your twitter that palin is a piece of work.

As a fellow jew I will say the jews that don’t know who there friends and enemies are should be the ones called the real pieces of work.

It sickens me how blind these people are and how much they are destroying israel.

I guess you love obama blaming jews for the deaths of u.s troops.

Have you ever on twitter called your anti israel hero obama a real piece of work.

Van Jones who obama hired said israel was occupying in 1948 on alex jones show.

The radical left is your enemy not sarah palin.

The jewish left is so blind it is outrageous.

Why didn’t you call the lefties who had joe lieberman as scarface a real piece of work.

Yet you keep voting for democrats.

Cantor Penny Kessler says:

Sarah Palin and her ilk are a disgrace. That some Jews are willing to get into bed with her speaks volumes about how uninformed, desperate and self-deprecating they are to be loved by people who are using them for their own ill-gotten gains. Sarah Palin’s appropriating real horror and atrocity aimed at Jews – and Jews’ letting her get away with it – is nothing less than a shonda.

Milton says:

Left, right. What’s the difference? Go far enough in each direction and they meet. We Jews are in this world alone. We should never forget this.

Marty Janner says:

Cantor Penny,
I agree with your conclusions in their entirety, However certain Jews here in the USA are so enamored with Israel they can’t see beyond their noses!

They in their wisdom forget the duality of our existence relative to the State of Israel, and living the life we enjoy in America.

The real question is whether we wish to live in an environment that has no regard for our vision of fairness to our entire populace or subscribing to the tenets of Republicanism which is rampart at the present time.

Israel remains in our hearts, but their attitude inexplicable!!

I consider myself a liberal, and do not recognize my opinions in any of the views attributed to liberals in the comments on this story. Bertrand Russell, in his 1933 essay The Triumph of Stupidity says that “…in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.” Most of the people whose opinions I read, hear and watch do not have an open mind and have no room in their world view for doubt. Unfortunately, most of these commentators are conservatives. I listen to conservative talker Mark Levine, a Jew, and wonder how he is repairing the world.

Conan M. Kaufman says:

Accusing someone of a blood libel is standard in Israeli political discourse. Hardly a day goes by in Israel without a politician — right or left — accusing the press of blood-libeling him.

One might rightly suspect the motives of Jews who jump on Sarah Palin for defending herself against false accusations by employing a term that is in standard, everyday use by Jews in Israel under similar circumstances.

Cantor Penny Kessler says:

This is the US, not Israel.

In Israel, it is (usually) *JEWS* who may be using such metaphors; it would be considered absolutely vile and inappropriate for someone who is not a Jew to do so.

For SP to wrap herself in the history of the Jews and to declare that being chastened for her behavior and language is the equivalent of pogroms and anti-Semitism is nothing less than an affront to Jews and a desecration of those who died for the sake of their religion and God.

Lucidity says:

Sarah Palin is an expert on blood libel. She can see Kishinev from her front porch.

Wm Preskill says:

Lie with dogs and you end up with fleas. The Tea Party that loves us til judgement day are creepy. Sarah Palin is the closest thing to Richard Nixon in the worst sort of whiny paranoid way. Nothing good will come of these kind of allies. Barack is nothing more than a LBJ liberal who wants to see an endgame to Israel-Palestinian deadlock The LBJ liberal, which in a boring way, has consistently supported Israels right to exist deserves some loyalty. Remember, the parents of the Tea Party were the ones keeping us out of Universities etc. You can’t tell me that the Christian Right wing wont return to form as soon as they need to.

Palin and her ilk (and let us note that she is hardly the worst offender here) have based their career on violent rhetoric (“Second Amendment remedy” as her friend Sharron Angle put it), nativist-identity politics, and anti-intellectualism in order to cover for their lack of ideas. That she and her fellow-travelers have been criticized for this, after a massacre that targeted one of her political enemies does not give her license to invoke the Blood Libel.

What this is about is Palin’s persecution complex. No one who knows Jewish history can possibly view Palin’s invocation to be in good taste.

Michael says:

Many of the defenders of Pallin miss the point. It is significant that her “map” utilized gun-related imagery. It is significant that she has not raised the question: how was the shooter able to secure a weapon legally? It is significant that one does not have to make or show a causal link between the shooter and political rhetoric: the point is that there’s a correlation between acts against politicians and organizations (this is merely the most dramatic and publicized) and the imagery and metaphors used by some very popular commentators and politicians themselves.

Mel kahan says:

Sarah Palin was absolutely correct to use the term ‘blood libel’. The term refers to a deliberate and false claim that someone has caused the death of another person or group. The term originated with Jews, but it’s been used by many Israeli Jews and I don’t see why non-Jews can’t use the term when appropriate. Sarah Palin is right: Left-wing journalists in the New York Times and other media outlets have accused Sarah Palin of causing the Tucson massacre, despite evidence that the killer was mentally ill and had no interest in Sarah Palin’s views or any other political ideology. It is sickening that J-Street, which continues to support the blood libel contained in the Goldstone report, is now using this tragedy to attack Sarah Palin. And it’s disgraceful that the comments of readers above continue to repeat the smear that conservatives caused this tragedy.

Milton says:

Sarah Palin has moved the attention away from herself to the Jews. Isn’t that what all faschists do?

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

It is becoming evident that the Tablet is hiding behind some center columns a liberal online mag.

Starting to lose interest. Don’t read the forward so why this one?
