Gabe Zimmerman, who was killed Saturday.(Gabe Zimmerman Prayers Page/Facebook)

Gabe Zimmerman, 30, was killed Saturday at an event he organized. A Jewish Tucson native, Zimmerman is described as an “avid hiker” who tackled the Grand Canyon from the North to the South Rim. His father works at Pima Community College, which his son’s alleged murderer, Jared Lee Loughner, had attended. He was engaged to Kelly O’Brien, a nurse. If you knew Zimmerman and would like to talk about him, please email me.

The five other reported dead are John M. Roll, 63, the first federal judge murdered since 1989; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; Phyllis Schneck, 79; and Christina Green, 9.

UPDATE: See comments below. JTA’s The Eulogizer reports that Zimmerman was now Jewish. And Rabbi Andy Bachman makes an interesting case.

WAIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY TO COMMENT?
Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

I NEED TO BE HEARD! BUT I DONT WANT TO PAY.
Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at letters@tabletmag.com. Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

Maybe a “new read on Jewish life” shouldn’t differentiate between who’s Jewish and who’s not–this is a disaster for everyone.

Hineni says:

I heard somewhere that Zimmerman was not Jewish. Please fact-check this, and let your readers know.

The Eulogizer – Jewish obituary columnist for JTA – checked Zimmerman out and can say definitively that he was not Jewish. His step-mother is, and he worked at Jewish camps, but numerous sources close to him told The Eulogizer and JTA definitively that Zimmerman was not Jewish. His death is still a terrible tragedy, of course.

Who cares what color, race, nationality people are if they are victims of a horrific tragedy.

Americans were killed at the hands of a very ill person.

..a child was among the dead
..a mother was among the dead
..a father was among the dead
..a sibling was among the dead

They are all lives that were lost and should be held and recognized at an equal standard.
Why must we label?
