Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

Another one? Where are these Atlantic subscription cards coming from?

Glad to see Goldberg hanging out with a murderous thug.

Hey everyone, I found a partial transcript of their meeting in a trash bid near The Atlantic Monthly’s office at the Watergate.

Goldberg-“Tell me Fidel, how is it you’ve been reelected decade after decade?”

Fidel-“Well Jeff, I just lock my opponents and throw away the room! Hahahahaha!!!”

Goldberg-“Man, that is awesome Fidel! I wish our government could do that to those sinkin’ teabaggers. They are sooooo annoying.”

Tell me Marc, why do lefties like yourself, embrace murderous thugs of the Left? They aren’t any different than murderous thugs of the Right. What makes them special? Is it because they spout all the talking-points you want to hear? If that’s all, then that is pretty pathetic.

Rick Goldberg says:

The better-equipped Goldberg (me) went to Cuba ten years ago. Though not affiliated with a university, I am a practicing social scientist who wanted to see how well the caudillo-marxist system fits the Cuban people.

Since I speak Spanish fluently, I rented a car and drove around the country meeting and talking to ordinary people for two weeks. I was not “guided” around on a government tour, so the reception I got from the Cubans I met was sincerely different from that of other Americans who visit Cuba.

In a nutshell, Cubans are the most entrepreneurial/productive people of all the Latin Americans. Despite being grateful for the revolution fifty years ago, they now feel stifled, and are more than ready to live in a market economy instead of a government-centered one in which everything is owned (at least in part) and rationed by the privileged class. Based on my experience, leftist American and European romanticism about Castro, Guevara and the “revolution” appears completely foolish.

Very cute — but why not have the courtesy to identify Adela Dworin, a woman known to many who have visited Havana’s Jewish community and deserving of respect.

This link is somewhat dated, she has since become President of the community, but gives a good rendering
of much of her history there:

[ She has a long-time public relationship with Fidel,
tells about her being the first to invite him to visit
the large synagogue where she is based — which he did
years ago in an important symbolic event. ]
