This summer we’re bringing you daily posts from our sister site, Jewcy.com, edited by Gabriela Geselowitz. You can find more from Jewcy here.
Cue “Summer Lovin’” from Grease, because we are having a summer party of ahava!
Guess which obscure Jewish holiday is on the horizon? If you answered Tisha B’Av, you’re wrong! Less than a week after that bummer day, is Tu B’Av, aka Jewish Valentine’s Day.
There are lots of beautiful Tu B’Av historical traditions, like women borrowing white dresses and dancing in vineyards to attract a spouse. In this day and age, we mostly just get awful singles’ parties.
And so, for the second year in a row, Jewcy presents a holiday alternative: Love Bites.
Love Bites is a hilarious evening (in New York City) for everyone regardless of relationship status, in which we get some catharsis with stories of Jewish romance, sex, et cetera. Last year’s event was amazing; we had a song about a sexual postman, a monologue about ending up as a footnote in a terrible “Modern Love” column, and obviously, reminisces of Jewish summer camp.
This year’s shindig is Monday, August 7, doors at 7 p.m. for a 7:30 program start (technically, the holiday ends at sunset, but we will party into the night!). The venue is Stone Creek in Manhattan, 140 E. 27th St. Admission is FREE (!) with a two-item minimum.
And finally: Do you (yes, you!) want to perform? Musicians, storytellers, comedians, slam poets, hell, if you can somehow make juggling about Jewish love or dating (in under ten minutes) we’d be down. Email [email protected] with a brief bio and pitch. Jews of all stripes, sexual orientations, and backgrounds encouraged to apply!
Finally, you can see the Facebook event for the evening here.
See you on the seventh!
