New books and events from contributors to the Jewish Encounters Series

Print Email

A number of our contributors are in the news for having published new books, and some will be participating in public programs to promote them over the next few weeks; it’s our pleasure to bring them to your attention:

Hillel Halkin, who contributed Yehuda Halevi to Nextbook’s Jewish Encounters series, has written an erudite biography of Vladimir Jabotinsky (Jabotinsky: A Life) for Yale University Press’s Jewish Lives series, which hits the shelves on May 27. Halkin will be visiting the United States from Israel upon the occasion of the book’s publication and will take part in two public programs in the New York area:

On Sunday, June 1, he will be participating in a half-day conference on Menachem Begin’s Zionism, along with Tablet contributors and Nextbook authors Daniel Gordis and Ruth Wisse, at Manhattan’s Congregation Shearith Israel. The following evening, Halkin will take part in a conversation on Rethinking Jabotinsky at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

Nextbook authors Rebecca Newberger Goldstein and Joseph Telushkin also have new titles hitting the shelves. Goldstein, author of Betraying Spinoza, has just published Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away, the subject of a laudatory New York Times review. On June 10, Telushkin, who wrote Hillel: If Not Now, When? is releasing Rebbe: The Life and Teachings of Menachem M. Schneerson, the Most Influential Rabbi in Modern History.

Finally, upon the occasion of the debut of another volume in Yale’s Jewish Lives series, Adam Phillips’ Becoming Freud: The Making of a Psychoanalyst, our contributing editor Daphne Merkin will be in conversation with Phillips at New York City’s 92 Y. The event, titled On the Couch, will take place on Tuesday evening, June 10.
