‘The Struggle of the World’

A Spanish leftist speaks out for Israel—and she’s not even Jewish

Print Email
(Vanessa Davis)

The Emails of Zion is a collection of messages from Jewish parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and others who are eager—often way too eager—to inform their children about issues of pressing concern to the Jewish community. Some of these emails may sound crazy, paranoid, ethnocentric, and/or racist, while others are disturbingly sane. These are the voices of our elders, lightly edited and presented for the convenience of their progeny, who are often too busy to write back.

Subject: RE: Fwd: Fw: A non Jew and active member of Spain’s left, speaks out

Pilar Rahola is a Spanish politician, journalist and activist and member of the far left. Her articles are published in Spain and throughout some of the most important newspapers in Latin America:

Why don’t we see demonstrations against Islamic dictatorships in London, Paris, Barcelona?

Or demonstrations against the Burmese dictatorship?

Why aren’t there demonstrations against the enslavement of millions of women who live without any legal protection?

Why aren’t there demonstrations against the use of children as human bombs where there is conflict with Islam?

Why has there been no leadership in support of the victims of Islamic dictatorship in Sudan?

Why is there never any outrage against the acts of terrorism committed against Israel?

Why is there no outcry by the European left against Islamic fanaticism?

Why don’t they defend Israel’s right to exist?

Why confuse support of the Palestinian cause with the defense of Palestinian terrorism?

And finally, the million dollar question: Why is the left in Europe and around the world obsessed with the two most solid democracies, the United States and Israel, and not with the worst dictatorships on the planet? The two most solid democracies, who have suffered the bloodiest attacks of terrorism, and the left doesn’t care.

And then, to the concept of freedom. In every pro Palestinian European forum I hear the left yelling with fervor: “We want freedom for the people!”

Not true. They are never concerned with freedom for the people of Syria or Yemen or Iran or Sudan, or other such nations. And they are never preoccupied when Hammas destroys freedom for the Palestinians. They are only concerned with using the concept of Palestinian freedom as a weapon against Israeli freedom. The resulting consequence of these ideological pathologies is the manipulation of the press.

The international press does major damage when reporting on the question of the Israeli-Palestinian issue. On this topic they don’t inform, they propagandize.

When reporting about Israel the majority of journalists forget the reporter’s code of ethics. And so, any Israeli act of self-defense becomes a massacre, and any confrontation, genocide. So many stupid things have been written about Israel, that there aren’t any accusations left to level against her.

At the same time, this press never discusses Syrian and Iranian interference in propagating violence against Israel; the indoctrination of children and the corruption of the Palestinians. And when reporting about victims, every Palestinian casualty is reported as tragedy and every Israeli victim is camouflaged, hidden or reported about with disdain.

And let me add on the topic of the Spanish left. Many are the examples that illustrate the anti-Americanism and anti-Israeli sentiments that define the Spanish left. For example, one of the leftist parties in Spain has just expelled one of its members for creating a pro-Israel website. I quote from the expulsion document: “Our friends are the people of Iran, Libya and Venezuela, oppressed by imperialism, and not a Nazi state like Israel.”

In another example, the socialist mayor of Campozuelos changed Shoah Day, commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, with Palestinian Nabka Day, which mourns the establishment of the State of Israel, thus showing contempt for the six million European Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

Or in my native city of Barcelona, the city council decided to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel, by having a week of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Thus, they invited Leila Khaled, a noted terrorist from the 70’s and current leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a terrorist organization so described by the European Union, which promotes the use of bombs against Israel.

This politically correct way of thinking has even polluted the speeches of President Zapatero. His foreign policy falls within the lunatic left, and on issues of the Middle East he is unequivocally pro Arab. I can assure you that in private, Zapatero places on Israel the blame for the conflict in the Middle East, and the policies of foreign minister Moratinos reflect this. The fact that Zapatero chose to wear a kafiah in the midst of the Lebanon conflict is no coincidence; it’s a symbol.

Spain has suffered the worst terrorist attack in Europe and it is in the crosshairs of every Islamic terrorist organization. As I wrote before, they kill us will cell phones hooked to satellites connected to the Middle Ages. An yet the Spanish left is the most anti Israeli in the world.

And then it says it is anti Israeli because of solidarity. This is the madness I want to denounce in this conference.

I am not Jewish. Ideologically I am left and by profession a journalist. Why am I not anti-Israeli like my colleagues? Because as a non-Jew I have the historical responsibility to fight against Jewish hatred and currently against the hatred for their historic homeland, Israel. To fight against anti-Semitism is not the duty of the Jews, it is the duty of the non-Jews.

As a journalist it is my duty to search for the truth beyond prejudice, lies and manipulations. The truth about Israel is not told. As a person from the left who loves progress, I am obligated to defend liberty, culture, civic education for children, coexistence and the laws that the Tablets of the Covenant made into universal principles.

Principles that Islamic fundamentalism systematically destroys. That is to say that as a non-Jew, journalist and lefty I have a triple moral duty with Israel, because if Israel is destroyed, liberty, modernity and culture will be destroyed too.

The struggle of Israel, even if the world doesn’t want to accept it, is the struggle of the world.

Tablet is committed to bringing you the best, smartest, most enlightening and entertaining reporting and writing on Jewish life, all free of charge. We take pride in our community of readers, and are thrilled that you choose to engage with us in a way that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. But the Internet, for all of its wonders, poses challenges to civilized and constructive discussion, allowing vocal—and, often, anonymous—minorities to drag it down with invective (and worse). Starting today, then, we are asking people who'd like to post comments on the site to pay a nominal fee—less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation. All proceeds go to helping us bring you the ambitious journalism that brought you here in the first place.

Readers can still interact with us free of charge via Facebook, Twitter, and our other social media channels, or write to us at Each week, we’ll select the best letters and publish them in a new letters to the editor feature on the Scroll.

We hope this new largely symbolic measure will help us create a more pleasant and cultivated environment for all of our readers, and, as always, we thank you deeply for your support.

SSecunda says:

I always enjoy reading your collection of “E-mails of Zion.” But why not spread the love around? I’ve received my share of paranoid, alarmist, and wonderfully entertaining emails from the Left. Sure, “E-mails of Post-Zion” does not occupy as many megabytes in our e-mail boxes, but there are still some real classics.

Roxana says:

It is so simple, so true, and yet so rare !
Judaism teaches us that ‘a little bit of light can destroy a lot of darkness’.
Thank you for being the light we see so seldon!
Thank you for saying out loud what the majority of people should see and say!

The Elders says:

SSecunda – We would love more contributions from the left. But all we’ve received so far in that vein was a wonderful email from our respected Berkeley Elder Rabbi Michael Lerner. Please send all submissions to the elders email box and we will be happy – nay, eager – to consider them.

A.L. Bell says:

On the one hand: amen!! The frustrating thing about European prejudice that masquerades as pro-Palestinian rhetoric is that few in Europe ever recognize that roughly the same sorts of arguments they make concerning Israel and Palestine apply to many, many arguments all over the world. They hold Israel to a standard that their own European countries cannot meet.

We have the right to expect others to be fair to us.

But we folks who are Jewish and love Israel also have a responsibility to root out unfairness and ignorance in our own communities. We need to understand, for example, that people who are Arab and/or Muslim are individual people, not just one big multi-bodied blob of human flesh with a vague connection to Yasser Arafat. And I know most people here understand that, but I think there are still a lot of Jewish people who really don’t.

Jeremiah says:

It is important for all of us, wherever we fall on the political or idealogical spectrum, to hear opinions such as this. Thanks for sharing it. It should be noted, however, that this is not actually the “voice” of the relative who sent the email. It is a forward of an edited version of Pillar Rahola’s speech at the AIPAC Policy Conference in 2008, which is available elsewhere on the Internet.

C.E.Donnelly says:

- Israel doesnt have oil; Israel doesn’t pose a threat to Western Europe; Europe needs oil; Europeans like their trains and planes to arrive intact (with the passengers alive); Many Europeans live in fear of immigrants from Islamic countries who have moved into their cities; Political correctness and “fake” liberal democracy creates a climate where it is forbidden to criticize certain faiths / countries

Most Importantly: Israel does itself no favours by failing to provide moderate and intelligent spokespersons to western media to challenge and/or present an alternative perspective.

A couple of “smart” examples from UK where a spokesperson totally killed the presumptive view of the audience:

– A BBC radio news anchor was ripping into the Turkish Ambassador to the UK on the poor record of Turkey on human rights. The Ambassador pointed out that the UK had twice as many complaints to Amnesty as Turkey did. The interviewer didnt know what to say
– A BBC radio news anchor was ripping into a Sinn Fein politician on the grounds that every other political party was registered with the UK political ethics and campaign finance body in London. The Sinn Fein politician quickly responded that his party was registed with the equivalent Irish authority in Dublin. The interviewer didnt know what to say.

If Israel could be a little more Obama and a lot less Cheyney – the PR battle could be won rather quickly in Spain, France, UK, Germany, etc.

I read through the e-mail looking for words like “settlements”, “occupation”, or “Geneva Conventions”. I didn’t find them. An e-mail complaining about European criticism of Israel which never once acknowledges WHY Europeans are critical of Israel has really no serious argument to offer.

Robert Heller says:

The Europeans will go to any length to appease their Radical Islamic population under the false belief it will protect them from home grown terrorism. They worship the GOD of OIL, and attack Israel to protect their new God. One day the Europeans will wake up and find they are a minority in their own country. The are ready to forsake decency, honesty and truth on the alter of appeasement and oil….Sad but true.

Margie says:

Of course Israel is not perfect. No country is. Have you never wondered though why there is so much attention paid to Israel’s faults when they are echoed in many other countries in the world? Everything Israel does is under a giant magnifying glass and examined over and over and over again until there is a consciousness that they are worse than anyone else. This has been done to such an extent that people were surprised to find the wonderful side of Israel in Haiti and insulted it to explain what they didn’t understand.

Dorothy Wachsstock says:

The U.N. was created just to make resolutions against Israel but where are the Jews in this country? Hollywood Jews make telethons for all the world except Israel.

As we watch the anti-Israeli attitude of Pres. Obama, I worry about the future of my children. Do you realy think that it cannot happen here as we do the same things with radical muslims in order not to offend?

I love your magazine and am behind but even as I delete political emails when ill, I cannot delete one of them that come from “Tablet”. I must read them all and forward them to friends and even Rabbis to enjoy and encourage them to subscibe.

Old Man says:

Pilar Rahola, I am the very pposite of leftist in my conception of life and the world, but I find more sense in your article than I have seen anywhere in a long time. Wake up Europe !!!

lovelyisraelis says:

Yes. Everyone’s an anti-semite. Judge Goldstone, Human Rights Watch, The Red Cross, Bt’Selem.

Boy. Highly original.

What a vile, lying imbecile this woman is.

Martyn Jones says:

Pilar Rahola is not vile, and she does not lie, she is principled, even if I think she is frequently wrong.

The thing is, almost nothing is black and white, there is nuance in almost everything, and generalisations are generalisations. Even if generalisations about more than 800 million people, really does break the Bank of Stupid.

lovelyisraelis says:

She doesn’t lie? Maybe not when she’s sleeping. Every other word from her mouth is an outrageous lie. She tries to pass off her racist filth as the voice of the “far left” though her god awful writings only appear on far right Nazi sites like Frontpage and CAMERA and (to its lasting discredit) Tablet.

She calls herself a “human rights advocate” while cheerleading for the massacre of Palestinian children. She claims that the media focuses more on Palestinian civilian victims than Israeli victims, when everyone knows precisely the opposite is the case.

People like her are the leading source of global anti-Semitism today. Israel bombs and massacres and cleanse the land of those they deem racially impure, then wonders why the world looks on with utter disgust and revulsion.
